SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE, PHILADELPHIA GIFT
It’s difficult to explain why I chose to share 10% of all
donations made to Writing Man Productions in 2009
with the Philadelphia affiliate of Susan G. Komen for
the Cure.
It’s difficult because the woman who inspired me to do
this is extremely private and so, I’m sure, would not
want me to share too many of her personal details.
What I can say, it is because of this woman’s support
that this theater company has succeeded as well as it
has! There has been absolutely no one who has
been more appreciative of the work we have done,
and no one who has assisted us in the fiscal aspects
of our productions.
This woman who has known me for about as long is
humanly possible, has also been my loudest
cheerleader in every single facet of my life. She has
rooted me on to follow my dreams, celebrating with
me when I succeed, consoling me when I fail and

loving me enough to let me know when I start to stray from my intended path. To put it
simply, she has done more for me than I will EVER be able to repay, even in kind.
As any other person with a friend or family member suffering from breast cancerknows
there is nothing to make a person feel more painful than watching someone they love go
through the experience and be totally powerless to do anything but sit and be able to
offer nothing more than moral support, as important as that is. That is why this gesture is
being made in her honor.
What was not difficult about this decision was choosing Susan G. Komen for the Cure,
Philadelphia.
Founded in 1982 as The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation by Nancy
Goodman Brinker as a promise to her sister, who had died two years earlier at the age of
36, to find a way to speed up breast cancer research, Susan G Komen For The Cure is
the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists and
volunteers fighting to save lives. They have 122 affiliates in 47 of the United States and

three countries. They provide grants for critically needed breast cancer research (since 1982 over 1,000 grants
totaling more than $180million have been distributed) as well as provide money to raise awareness and improve
education on the disease which, according the World Health Organization, kills more than 500,000 people each year.
Since its inception in 2001, Susan G. Komen For The Cure, Philadelphia has provided over $12million to local
organizations in 13 counties spanning Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. This money has been put toward
education, screening, treatment and support for the medically underserved, not to mention to the main research for the
cure. They also conduct cultural outreach programs to promote early detection – critical in successful treatment – and
are striving to close the gap of disparity for the under-and-uninsured.
When I was sitting by the side of the person in my life who has breast cancer as she received her chemotherapy
treatment, I asked myself, what could I possibly do to make this better? The answer at which I finally arrived was –
nothing. Not as an individual. However, if this individual reaches out to other people for help to providing assistance to
all the others who have already started the process to find the cure – then what I can do, what we can do, is limitless!
